NPSA CONGRESS 2025 – NEW YORK
THE 24TH ANNUAL CONGRESS OF THE INTERNATIONAL NEUROPSYCHOANALYSIS SOCIETY
EARLY MENTAL DEVELOPMENT: INCUBATING THE FUTURE
At this year’s World Congress of Neuropsychoanalysis (NPSA), held at the prestigious Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, the Institute for Philosophy and Interdisciplinary Studies from Novi Sad presented a paper in the field of interactive psychoanalysis.
The paper, authored by philosopher and interactive psychoanalyst Igor Grujičić, is titled “Interactivity as a fundamental human phenomenon”. It explores the intersections of philosophy, psychoanalysis, and neuroscience, with a particular emphasis on the role of interactivity in the early development of consciousness and identity.
The central focus of the paper is the phenomenon of early mental development, which the author links to the differentiation of sensory perception—a process that lays the groundwork for the emergence of abstract thinking. The newborn’s initial state of consciousness is described as an “archaic anarchy of the libido,” in which primary process thinking dominates. Through gradual differentiation, the child begins to recognize and respond to environmental demands. The author also highlights instances of regression, where even adults with developed abstract thinking may enter a state in which they believe their thoughts can “predict the future.” To test this hypothesis, a study is proposed to examine unconscious connections between visual stimuli and subjects’ verbal responses—potentially opening new avenues for understanding patterns of thought in psychotic states.
The paper was successfully presented at the congress by his colleague, interactive psychoanalyst Nebojša Maksimović, who clearly and inspiringly conveyed the core ideas of the work, with a special focus on the importance of early experiences and prenatal mental life—a topic originally introduced by Sándor Ferenczi, which contemporary research is now deepening in new ways.
The significance of the event was also reflected in the strong interest shown in Agrafa – Journal for Philosophy of Psychoanalysis, which garnered considerable attention among the international professional community following the presentation.
As a gesture of support for Maksimović’s participation, the Institute organized a live online broadcast of his presentation from New York.
